Alligator Story for Greater than or less than symbol
Of course kids will know which is bigger or smaller number. But, they get confused when representing it with the symbol (< or >).
One simple trick is to remember this alligator story. Imagine there are three apples on the left side of the alligator, and seven apples on the right side of the alligator. For this story, the alligator likes apples, and it is hungry right now. Which side do you think the alligator will pick to eat?
The alligator will open its mouth wide towards the side where there are more apples. Do you know that the mouth of the alligator looks like less than or greater than symbol?
The wider opening of the alligator mouth will face the side containing more apples. Likewise, the wider opening of the symbol should face the bigger number.
If both the numbers are equal, you can use an equal to sign (=) without any confusion.
